Wellbutrin/Zyban? Does it work?

My doctor placed me on Wellbutrin which is an anti-depressent - it seems to really help in curving the appetite. This drug has also helped those wanting to quit smoking. Except that my dreams are wierd if I go on the required dosage of 2, so I stick to 1. I have also just joined Jenny Craig - Has anyone out there have had long term success with this drug?

hi - how has the wellbutrin worked out for you? i just started it 5 days ago. i was on it last summer and lost about 7 lbs. (i was under a lot of relationship stress at the time, but still i went to a weight i had not been able to get to for years). i am concerned that i might gain weight on wellbutrin this time, as some people apparently do. i would really like to hear about anyone’s experience with wellbutrin.

There was an interesting medical research study recently (you can find the articles by doing an internet search for "weight loss" and "bupropion," wellbutrin’s real name) that found that 24 weeks of taking wellbutrin "in combination with a lifestyle intervention program that included an energy-restricted diet and exercise, resulted in significant weight loss in obese patients."

During the initial 24-week period, the people in the study (which involved a moderate exercise regimen in addition to a reduced-calorie diet (600 fewer calories per day than normally would be required to maintain their current weight) facilitated by the use of a twice-daily meal replacement (slim-fast)and receiving Bupropion SR) lost weight as follows: those who took Bupropion SR 400mg/day lost a larger percentage of initial body weight (10.1 percent) than those receiving Bupropion SR 300mg/day (7.2 percent) or those receiving placebo (5 percent).

Note that the article states that Bupropion SR has not been approved by FDA for weight loss and has not been studied extensively in obese patients. Bupropion/zyban/wellbutrin is used for depression but also as a stop-smoking aid.

To be honest, I stopped taking the pills, partly because I didn’t like my mood swings and could not attribute it to either the metabolife or wellbutrin. I am trying to lose weight by cutting down portions - so far it seems to be working.

I took those about 5 years ago I had a busted ear drum and my doctor he hates smoking and I wanted to stop smoking, talk about a bad mood swing It was cheaper to smoke than replace things I broke in the house for 4 mths.
I didn’t know at the time they were a anti-depression pill.I made 1 more trip back to that doc just say it wasnt pretty.I like to know what I am on and what all it covers.I cant stand them myself.

    HI,
I was on wellbutrin for a month, and I gained 10 pds. But, I was also on Zoloft at the same time, which slows you down (for anxiety). I did not like it, because it didn’t help with my depression. I’m now on effexor. Also, my Mom is on wellbutrin and hasn’t had any weight loss, infact, she’s gained 15 pds in the last year. (she’s 5′2, 39yrs old, 145)… Everyone is different (chemically, genetically etc), so it may acutally help you, especially if it curves your appetite.

About the smoking. The reason it is used to help smokers quit smoking is because, smoking is generally considered a nervous habit, and if you have something to calm your nerves then (logically by Dr.s) you should quit/slow down smoking. Didn’t help me with that either.

Good luck with the medication, but if things don’t work out, effexor (what I’m on now for depression) is a little better as far as it’s affect on your depression.

But definitely give the wellbutrin a chance if it’s giving you positive results. Switching between med.s is very stressful. If it works–keep it

    Good luck
